My own introduction to the retina came as a graduate student in John Dowling's laboratory
beginning in the late summer of 1974. Along with Sandy Ostroy, who was on sabbatical, and
with the help of another mentor, Howard Rasmussen, who was known for his seminal work
relating the intertwined effects of Ca 2+ and cyclic nucleotides, we began to study the
